Refurbishing second hand exhibition trailers
Refurbishing second hand exhibition trailers and exhibition vehicles by Scott Walker
Here at MVTech our primary business is the design and construction of new vehicles for a variety of specialist uses plus the conversion of new vans into a range of individualised uses. Our product range is extensive with the common denominator being that we concentrate on building unique and specialist vehicles and trailers (cash in transit vehicles and event trailers being a particular speciality), which are, more often than not, one off unique builds (such as individualised camping vans or mobile veterinary surgeries) although we do, just as easily, design and construct fleets too, especially for our cash in transit clients.
That all said, we have many clients for whom, for one reason or another, we take an existing pre-owned vehicle and convert it to their specific requirement. Second hand trailers and vehicles can often be purchased at very competitive prices, so financially, it can make sense to opt for a second hand option. However, more often than not where vehicles are required, the need to go this second hand route arises much more from time constraints rather than any budget restriction.
Buying new may be the initial intention but when it turns out that this may require a 10 or even 12 week wait from the vehicle manufacturer before we can take delivery, and begin to start work, then many cannot wait for what can easily turn out to be a 5 or 6 month delivery for the completed vehicle. Whereas a second hand model, assuming suitability, can be available within days for us to commence work immediately.
Refurbishing second hand exhibition trailers therefore makes sense and can be good practice. https://www.multivehicletechnology.co.uk/services/refurbishment/
For clients requiring exhibition trailers or exhibition vehicles this can be particularly important. Very often roadshow campaigns rely on spontaneous action to fulfil a marketing need, for whom waiting is simply not an option. In these situations we look at what second hand stock we have available or alternatively search the market via our extensive contacts to find a base trailer or vehicle that is suitable for a change of use.
In the very worst case scenarios, we have had to remove existing bodies and almost start from scratch but, generally speaking, it is only conversion and refurbishment that is required. For example we can add extension pods, swing out display panels and even stages to existing trailers and vehicles. Some require the installation of wheelchair lifts whilst other jobs may require the installation of generators, air conditioning and water supply systems.
Existing interiors can be stripped out and rebuilt to suit any new layout containing whatever features are required. Generally this does necessitate the need for a new electrical installation and re-wiring, but all of this we handle in house which is then independently certified.
Graphics too will need to be changed on a second hand unit, particularly so when for roadshow use, and any existing graphics can be removed and replaced with new, be it basic graphics or a complete body wrap. Again at MVTech we do all of this in house in our centrally located factory in Leicester.
Of course another type of vehicle which is, more often than not, sourced second hand is the eponymous bus. Single deck and double deck buses do have their uses and do have their attractions to a number of our clients. Ideal for conversion for product tasting or sampling roadshow promotions the double deck bus (such as the Routemaster) has the advantage that the public can be seen on the lower deck whilst trade clients can be entertained on the upper deck. Smaller single deck buses are also ideal for refurbishment as their smaller size opens up access to more locations. A number of Optare models are ideal for this type of conversion being attractive in their styling.
The good thing with sourcing a second hand bus is a strong availability of all types and sizes so, we find, we can usually quite quickly source a vehicle to suit an end use and budget.
Talking of second hand refurbishment we must not forget about the opportunity ex mobile libraries present. Although perhaps not as readily available as a few years ago, there currently remains a reasonable supply of various sizes and designs from which to choose. That said, as with some buses, these vehicles can have experienced a hard working life so inspection by specialists such as ourselves is advised before purchasing. Even then we have to admit that it can be impossible to identify every issue before starting to strip out and rebuild. But that warning given we have, over the years, provided ex mobile libraries with some stunning and highly successful second lives including roadshow promotional vehicles and travelling shops, with one even being turned into a mobile job search and recruitment vehicle.
Second hand, pre-owned, are approaches not to be embarrassed about or sniffed at. Seeking to buy and refurbish an existing vehicle makes a lot of sense! If a client prefers to buy and supply to us to undertake a conversion or refurbishment we are happy to work this way.
Alternatively, if finding a suitable vehicle or trailer is proving difficult then we can use our extensive contacts to source something for you. In addition to the used market we have exceptional relationships with van and chassis cab manufacturers and dealerships. This often enables us to locate otherwise unadvertised and immediately available pre-registered vehicles or ex demonstrators, many of which have travelled less than 100 miles. Vehicles in these categories are normally exceptional value for money so always speak to us first before buying.
So far reference has been made to buying second hand trailers or vehicles for conversion or refurbishment. Hopefully it goes without saying that if you already own a mobile and simply want it modernised, improved or updated then MVTech is happy to advise, quote and undertake any work required. We provide a full service, repair and maintenance service including collection and delivery too.
